Become a Southwark Cathedral Guide!

Love history and storytelling?

Interested in sharing 900 years of stories of Southwark Cathedral? Enjoy dealing with the general public?

Southwark Cathedral is looking to recruit volunteer Guides to help join our team and deliver amazing Cathedral tours including group visits, drop in tours and evening tours. We offer extensive and in-depth training, expenses once volunteering and the opportunity to join us on outings to archives and museums.

Training takes approximately three months with sessions alternating between Wednesday evening and Saturdays starting on 2 March 2019. A written and practical test has to be undertaken and passed to become a Cathedral Guide. New Guides are given priority to take tours and must commit to a minimum of one year’s guiding at the Cathedral.

There is opportunity to grow the role by offer walking tours in the local area, assisting with the history resources at the Cathedral and doing research into new walks.

Sophie, one of our existing guides, describes her experience as a Guide at Southwark Cathedral:

“I’ve been volunteering as a Guide at Southwark Cathedral for over 10 years and I love my role! I proudly put on my purple Guides’ ribbon and badge and wait for my group to arrive in the Courtyard. I have found that it is really easy to engage my groups in the history of the building, its monuments and its characters.  It is very rewarding when we get good feedback from groups and when they come back for another visit!”
